UNITED STATES (WSYR-TV) — The Senate has approved three new members of the International Joint Commission.
Among them is former State Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, who was nominated for the position by President Donald Trump.
The body has been responsible for releasing water into the St. Lawrence River to keep Lake Ontario water levels consistent.
Now, Corwin will have a strong voice that could help Lake Ontario communities, which are mindful of the rising lake levels.
She said rising lake levels will be a top priority and she is ready to raise her concerns.
“I think what’s important here is we have to consider the weather patterns as they exist today, not as they existed five, 10, 15 years ago, and decide is the policy that’s been implemented effectively given the new weather patterns,” Corwin said.
In the past, Governor Andrew Cuomo, who dealt with the effects of extreme property erosion in 2017, has been critical of both the IJC for not coming up with a better plan and the federal government for not confirming Corwin sooner.
