ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A tractor trailer driver has been ticketed following a chain-reaction crash along Interstate 81 Thursday afternoon.
Deputies tell NewsChannel 9 that a 2004 Freightliner tractor trailer operated by Frederick Wong, 34, of Graniteville, South Carolina, was traveling northbound on the shoulder of Interstate 81 when his truck sideswiped a stopped 2019 Kenwood tractor trailer.
The chain reaction collision caused that Kenwood semi-truck to strike the rear end of a stopped Isuzu cargo box-style truck. Both were stopped in traffic due to an unrelated collision.
The collision between the two tractor trailers caused significant damage and trapped Wong inside his crushed cab. Rescue personnel from the Nedrow and Onondaga Hill Fire Departments requested additional assistance from the Syracuse Fire Department with extricating Wong from his tractor trailer.
After nearly an hour, Wong was removed from the wreckage and transported to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at the Nedrow/Onondaga Nation exit were closed for several hours before traffic could be diverted around the crash site. The lanes reopened around 8:35 p.m.
Wong was issued traffic tickets for speeding, following too closely and driving on the shoulder of the road. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Onondaga Court on September 19th.
