After 33 years with the New York State Police, Major Francis Coots is retiring from his post as commander of Troop D.
Coots will become the Director of Campus Safety at Hamilton College, passing up a promotion with the State Police in Albany to stay closer to his family in Syracuse.
Coots joined the Troopers in 1983, just after college graduation, and was first assigned to the barracks in Wolcott, in Wayne County.
There are two cases that stand out to Major Coots, the mass shooting in Herkimer County that left four people dead, and the death of Trooper Craig Todeschini, who was hit by a car in Onondaga County.
Coots’ last day in Wednesday.
The New York State Police Superintendent in Albany has not yet named the next commander.
