UPDATE: The vacant home on May Avenue has seen been demolished since this morning’s fire, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Fire crews battled heavy smoke and flames at a home on May Avenue in Syracuse early Sunday morning.

Crews were called to the two-story structure just off South Avenue near Hillview Avenue around 3:15 a.m. A Syracuse Fire Chief told NewsChannel 9 it took firefighters around 90-minutes to put out the fire.

Lt. Eric Yetman said the origin of the fire came from the rear of the structure.

The flames spread through the entire home and crews were forced to fight the blaze from the outside.

NewsChannel 9’s @JoshMartinNC9 said smoke could be seen from several blocks away and the structure appeared to be badly damaged.

The Chief added, the home had been vacant for quite some time and was boarded up. There was also no power going to the home, so they don’t know how the fire started at this time.

An investigation into the cause is underway.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
