Upstate University Hospital urges caution to avoid warm-weather injuries

Local News

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — As the Memorial Day weekend unofficially starts off the summer season, many will be spending time outside to bike, hike, swim and otherwise enjoy the pleasant weather.

But summer is also the busiest time for Upstate University Hospital’s level 1 trauma center.

According to Upstate, about three out of every ten trauma admissions annually occur in the months of June, July, and August.

Doctors are advising you use caution to keep safe.
“Whatever it is they do in the summertime, we definitely see a lot of people do a lot of things. They’re climbing on their roofs, they’re climbing in trees and falling, a lot of motor vehicle crashes, motorcycle crashes, actually as soon as the snow is melted,” said Joleen Kittle, Trauma Program Manager at Upstate University Hospital.

Last year, the trauma center handled 671 admissions during the peak summer months.
