What to expect at the airport when traveling this summer

Local News

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — As the summer season is picking up, so are the vacations. The TSA at Syracuse Hancock International Airport is expecting this to be the busiest summer travel season in the agency’s history.

The TSA and airport officials held a summer travel review on Tuesday, sharing travel tips and emphasizing the importance of getting a Real ID sooner rather than later.

“Just imagine a family of five, a husband, wife and three children going to Disney World. All those hard made plans, everything’s paid for, the reservations are made, dad’s all proud of himself showing up to the checkpoint, and he presents his ID and they say ‘sorry sir we cannot accept this because it’s not Real ID.’ Just imagine how he would feel and what the consequences are and are associated with that. It can be prevented. It’s being highly advertised now, so why not go for it now?” said Bart Johnson, TSA Federal Security Director for Upstate New York Airports.

Real ID is needed for flyers 18 and older who are traveling within the United States. Real ID goes into effect on October 1, 2020.
