The Madison County Department of Motor Vehicles is preparing for longer lines this new year and next year, blamed on a combination of a surge in driver’s license renewals, made worse by the Real ID requirements in 2020.

In October 2020, the current state driver’s license will not be valid to board any flight, including flights within the United States.

The DMV offers two upgrades – the Real ID and the Enhanced Driver’s License.

The Real ID is the same cost as the typical license renewal.

The Enhanced Driver’s License costs $30 more and allows New Yorkers without passports into and out of Canada and Mexico.

Both upgrades involve more verification the person is actually the person. A combination of passport, original birth certificate, social security card, W-2 form, marriage certificate and other documents are needed.

A list of needed verification is available on the New York State DMV’s website.

The Madison County Clerk says his DMV is prepared for the rush of people and installed a second camera for license photos to speed up the lines.
