Attorneys for a Rochester area mother accused of brutally murdering her 7-year-old son argued Friday that she is not mentally capable of moving forward in the case.

Hanane Mouhib was brought to court Friday in a wheelchair for arraignment. A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf.

She is currently being held without bail at the Central New York Psychiatric Center.

In court, Mouhib was only able to mumble responses back to the judge and the prosecution. Her attorneys said they conducted a mental competency exam and three doctors found her to be incompetent to stand trial. Prosecutor say they’ve never received the paperwork for that mental health exam though.

She is currently being held without bail at the Central New York Psychiatric Center.

Mouhib was arrested in early April after deputies were called to her home for a suicidal person. At the home, deputies say Mouhib had a knife; they say they had to taze and pepper-spray her to get her to put down the weapon.

While searching the home, deputies say they found seven-year-old Abraham Cardenas dead. Investigators say he had been stabbed and his neck and been cut so badly his head was severed.

Following her arrest, officials said deputies had been called to Mouhib’s home twice in March for mental health calls. For the second call, she was treated at Rochester General Hospital for more than two weeks before being released.

Mouhib is charged with murder for Cardenas’ death. Last month, state authorities said they were investigating Rochester General Hospital’s care of Mouhib.
