23 people were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol agents during a raid Monday evening in the suburban Buffalo community Hamburg.
Witnesses watched as Hamburg Police and Border Patrol agents swarmed the 7-Eleven store at Southwestern Boulevard and Sowles Road around 6:30 p.m.
Witnesses say the people, who were suspected of being in the U.S. illegally, were removed from white vans in the parking lot and detained.
A spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection tells News 4 this was a “random raid” that had nothing to do with policies implemented by President Trump or his administration. He says the agents happened to be driving through the area when the “…saw something worth investigating.”
Agents say the suspects have been transported to a holding facility where they will be processed, and the incident remains under investigation.
