GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — When the gates opened at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the heavy wind and downpours were rolling through, hindering some of the normal crowd we see on opening day of the State Fair, but it did not deter one group from making this a 15-year tradition.
“As soon as you step on the fairgrounds, it’s exciting,” said RJ Vayner.
“We look forward to this all year,” Jonathan Hoster said.
Rain or shine, this group of guys, who have been friends since college, wouldn’t miss opening day at the fair.
“This is the first year I actually asked myself what am I doing,” Vayner said. “Because of the rain, it’s usually much more pleasant than this.”
They’re as loyal as it gets. So loyal, Vayner has a metal medallion.
“See, he bought a dollar ticket. I spent 4200 for this so I don’t know who is the VIP here,” Vayner said.
They come for the experience and stay for the food and drinks.
“The wine slushies are waiting,” they said.
…and they leave with memories year after year.
“Usually it’s not raining, but we’re dealing with it,” Carmen Malagisi said.
For some loyal fairgoers, a little rain is nothing, and the good news is that it looks like it will be sunny the rest of the week.
