This week on Newsmakers, Dan Cummings’ guest is Bill Cregg, the Cicero man who helped comfort a dying woman and rescue a 10-year-old girl, both of whom had just been attacked by David Renz near the Great Northern Mall in Clay six years ago. Renz had removed his GPS ankle monitoring bracelet before committing the crimes. A bill named for Cregg was introduced in Congress this week, which would require the Justice Department to release data on crimes committed by people like Renz who are on pretrial release. The bill would also require a federal examination of the monitoring practices for defendants wearing ankle bracelets. Cregg’s research revealed at least 60 murders involving criminals who slipped out of electronic monitoring devices since the Renz case in 2013.
