ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Onondaga County Warrant Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help in locating Travis J. Carter, 40, who was arrested in June 2017 for grand larceny in St. Lawrence County for stealing money from a local farmer.
Carter was contracted to put a new porch on the farmer’s residence, took a down payment, purchased gift cards with the money and never built the porch. After his arrest, he was placed on probation in St. Lawrence County in February 2018. However, he requested his probation be transferred to Onondaga County in October, to live with relatives.
When Onondaga County Probation went to verify this, they discovered there were no relatives and he was living with a woman who he just met.
Then, in January of this year, State Police arrested Carter in Onondaga County for a similar con. He was contracted by a Lysander homeowner to upgrade a bathroom, mudroom, laundry, walkway, and garage.
After accepting a substantial down payment and starting the work, it became apparent to the victim that Carter did not know what he was doing and halted his work. Carter never finished the job and did not return any money.
Carter was arrested for the Grand Larceny, which resulted in a violation of probation charge as well.
Carter told the court he had a drug problem and his charges were transferred to Drug Court. A bench warrant for the original Grand Larceny charge was issued in August. Carter was arrested shortly thereafter and later released.
Since that time, probation has learned Carter does not have a drug issue and believes that he reported that to avoid sitting in jail. In addition, he is not living at the residence he had been and has not reported to probation since September 11th. His whereabouts are unknown at this time.
Carter was born in Alex Bay and has family ties to St. Lawrence County. He has spent time in Florida as well.
