CICERO (WSYR-TV) — Cicero Police say this is the time of year for car owners to be On The Lookout for theives who are stealing cars to commit other crimes.

“We have a high risk of vehicle larcenies. We’re seeing them in neighborhoods, but we’re also seeing them at local fire departments, as well as local dealerships in the area,” said Cicero Police Officer Ashley Smith.

In the past month, Cicero Police say at least four cars were stolen from four dealerships in Central New York and the Southern Tier. While police try to figure out if it’s an organized ring at work, we can do our part to make our vehicles less attractice to theives eager to find a getaway car.

“Whether they are walking around, checking doors to see if they’re unlocked, checking to see if keys are inside the vehicles, checking garages to see if the vehicles are in there — that’s what they are doing and how they are taking vehicles,” Officer Smith said.

Another troubling trend is thieves stealing license plates off of cars too. Make sure you have the proper bolts that are going to secure it completely and that they are fastened tight.

Whether parked in a big lot, or driveway, Cicero Police are reminding drivers and dealers to take extra precautions to protect your investment.
