Buffalo Police investigating potential hazing incident involving UB student

State News

(WIVB) — Buffalo Police are investigating an incident potentially involving hazing.

Police say the incident occurred overnight at a fraternity house on Custer St. in Buffalo.

As a result, an undergraduate UB student was taken to a hospital with a serious medical condition believed to be a result of the incident.

UB says the incident involves the Sigma Pi fraternity.

Official activities of all fraternities and sororities are suspended until further notice.

UB President Dr. Satish Tripathi released a statement on the matter:

“Dear university community,

This morning, I was informed that one of our UB students had been hospitalized with a serious medical condition as the result of a possible hazing incident.

We have reached out to the student’s family and are providing all the assistance and comfort we can to them during this incredibly difficult time. I ask you to keep this student – one of our own – and his family in your thoughts.

As the investigation into this very serious matter continues, let me reiterate that our university has zero tolerance for hazing. Not only are hazing incidents a violation of our university policies, but they are also crimes.

Therefore, at my direction, the official activities of all recognized fraternities and sororities are suspended effective immediately. Vice President A. Scott Weber will be immediately issuing a statement regarding the suspension of Greek life activities.

As a university community, we are committed to providing a safe educational environment for our students. Again at my direction, over the next several days, the university will perform an internal review into the activities of UB fraternities and sororities and will strongly counsel all Greek organizations about UB’s zero tolerance policy on hazing and the very serious consequences of hazing.

Satish K. Tripathi
President “

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact University police at (716) 645-2222.
