(SYRACUSE ATHLETICS 5/22/19) — Placekicker Andre Szmyt (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and safety Andre Cisco (Valley Stream, N.Y.) have been named preseason All-Americans by Athlon Sports. The reigning Lou Groza Award winner as the nation’s top kicker, Szmyt was voted to the first team, while Cisco, who tied for the national lead in interceptions last season, was picked to the third team. Both players were also selected to Athlon’s 2019 Preseason All-ACC First Team.

The preseason All-America and all-conference teams are included in Athlon’s 2019 College Football Preview, which is available in stores and on newsstands now.

A 2018 unanimous All-American, Szmyt led the FBS in most kicking categories, including connecting on an ACC-record 30 field goals. He also hit all 61 of his point-after attempts to finish with a Syracuse single-season record 151 points in 13 games. Szmyt’s average of 11.6 points per contest led the FBS.

Cisco tallied seven interceptions last season on his way to second-team All-America honors. The ACC’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, he set the program record for most passes defended by a true freshman (18) and ranked fourth on the team with 60 tackles (46 solo).

Overall, Syracuse was second behind Clemson (14) with 11 selections to Athlon’s Preseason All-ACC Team. In addition to Szmyt and Cisco, defensive end Alton Robinson (Converse, Texas), punter Sterling Hofrichter (Valrico, Fla.) and wide receiver Sean Riley (Los Angeles, Calif.) were picked to the first team.

The Orange’s leading receiver in 2018, Riley made the first team as the squad’s punt returner. He was also voted to the second team as an all-purpose player. Offensive lineman Airon Servais (Green Bay, Wis.) and defensive end Kendall Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind.) also received second-team plaudits.

Quarterback Tommy DeVito (Cedar Grove, N.J.), offensive lineman Evan Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) and cornerback Christopher Fredrick (Conley, Ga.) rounded out Syracuse’s selections by being voted to the third team.

In addition to the individual recognition, Syracuse checked in at No. 21 in the magazine’s preseason top 25. The Orange were one of three ACC schools included in the poll, along with Clemson (No. 2) and Virginia (No. 25). In the ACC Atlantic Division, Syracuse was picked to finish second to Clemson.

The Orange open the 2019 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Liberty.
