77-year-old Richard Heath, a Syracuse retiree who lives on the South Side, was presented with a New York State Lottery novelty check for $1,000,000 at the Mobil Mart on South Salina Street Thursday morning.

Heath chose the lump sum and will soon have more than $500,000 in his bank account.

Heath won the jackpot playing the $1,000 A Week For Life scratch-off game — a game he plays daily.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Heath at the check presentation. He says he won’t believe he’s won until he sees the money in his account.

Heath’s wife Beverly says the couple plays $40 worth of scratch-off tickets every day.

“They make up for themselves, so it’s worth it,” she said.

Richard is retired but, every day, helps children cross the road on their way to school at Van Duyn Elementary.

Heath plans to continue his crossing guard duties.

As for their winnings, the couple says they will pay off their bills, take care of their children and grandchildren, but also, they are planning to take a trip to Las Vegas.

They also plan to keep on playing scratch-off tickets.
