TALLAHASSEE, FL. (SYRACUSE ATHLETICS) – Eighth-seeded NC State (30-26) edged ninth-rated Syracuse (20-32), 4-3, in the first game of the ACC Tournament at JoAnne Graf Field on the Florida State campus in Tallahassee, Fla. The Wolfpack utilized a three-run first inning and three innings of shutout relief work from Kama Woodall to clinch the triumph.

ORANGE STRIKE FIRST
Syracuse manufactured the first run of the contest in the opening inning. Alicia Hansen singled to left and went to second on her squad-leading 19th stolen base of the season. She advanced to third on a wild pitch while Lailoni Mayfield walked. When Mayfield swiped second, Hansen came home to put the Orange ahead, 1-0.

THE WOLFPACK MAKE ROMERO WORK, TAKE THE LEAD
NC State induced 56 pitches from Syracuse starter Alexa Romero and plated three runners in the bottom half of the opening frame. The Wolfpack started with a single from Sam Russ and a walk to April Visser. The duo executed a double steal and Russ scored when Syracuse catcher Gianna Carideo’s pickoff attempt went into the outfield. Logan Morris induced a walk and then Visser scored and Morris reached third base on a passed ball. Skylar Johnston lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Morris with the third run.

SYRACUSE USES LONG BALL
Gabby Teran helped the Orange get back into the contest with a solo home run to left field against NC State starter Devin Wallace to lead off the third inning. The round-tripper was Teran’s third of the campaign.

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Wolfpack answered with what proved to be the game-clinching run in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases and with two outs, pinch-hitter Chandley Garner was hit by a Romero pitch to force in Skylar Johnson and put NC State ahead, 4-2.

ONE LAST ‘CUSE RALLY
A two-out double by Bryce Holmgren knocked in Alex Acevedo in the top of the fourth, shaving NC State’s advantage back to one run, 4-3. Wallace managed to get Teran to close out the frame and halt the Orange comeback.

WOLFPACK WRAP-UP
NC State turned to Woodall after Hansen walked to start off the fifth inning and she shut the door on the Orange, retiring all nine batters she faced, to pick up her first save of the campaign.

ROMERO FINISHES STRONG
After pitching her way through the difficult first inning, Romero was solid the rest of way. In six innings of work she yielded just two hits and struck out seven. Her eight walks, including five in the first inning, hampered the effort.

Syracuse was making its fifth appearance overall and fourth straight in the ACC Tournament
