Tompkins County lawmakers have voted on a plan Tuesday evening that would ban people under the age of 21 from buying tobacco products.
Legislatures voted 3-1 in favor with two members excused to adopt the law.
Those against the proposal said it isn’t right for the government to step in and say what adults (18 years and up) can buy, saying the law is too intrusive. Those for the law argue that anything that can be done to stop adults from smoking at an early age is a good move.
Proponents want to make clear that this law will only keep 18 and 19 and 20 year olds from purchasing cigarettes. They will still be able to carry them on their person.
