Bishop Moynihan served during some of the church’s most turbulent years.

In 2003, the church was confronted with the priest sex abuse crisis.

In October, 2003, he publicly apologized for the harm caused to victims of sexual abuse and asked any individual who had been harmed to report their abuse.

Bishop Moynihan also traveled to the Vatican for the Beatification of Blessed Marianne Cope – who was later canonized as Saint Marianne Cope, the diocese’s first saint.
