A new program for pre-schoolers from the Peace Incorporated Head Start Merrick School is using yoga to help children who may have been subjected to violence or trauma.
The program, developed by Syracuse University’s Falk College from a grant from the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, gives students in at-risk areas alternative ways to deal with adversity.
For eight weeks, Julie Daniel taught yoga to students at Head Start. It’s something many of them don’t normally have access to, but the program is designed to help them manage stress or deal with traumatic events.
The program is divided in three phases and for 20 minutes twice a week. Students learn breathing techniques and other calming exercises that will help them in their daily lives.
