Is the natural gas inspection notice left on my door a scam: Your Stories

Your Stories

Several viewers have reached out to NewsChannel 9 Your Stories team after finding a notice on their door about a natural gas inspection from RECONN Utility Services.

The notice contains National Grid’s logo and mentions a possible $100 fine if you don’t reschedule the inspection.
National Grid tells us that the cards are not scams.

A spokesperson says the inspections are performed for the safety of customers and a free service mandated by the New York State Public Service Commission.

The cards are left behind by RECONN Utility Services if you were not home when they stopped by.

A crew needs to access your home to complete the inspection.

The $100 fine is mandated by the PSC to ensure customers follow through with the inspection.

You can schedule an appointment four to six weeks after you received the noticed.

If they fail to get an inspection, your gas could get shut off.

The inspection is performed for the safety of customers and a free service mandated by the New York State Public Service Commission.

The inspections are performed in cycles:

  • Business customers are on a one-year cycle
  • Residential customers are on a three-year cycle
