DEWITT, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A NewsChannel 9 viewer sent a Your Stories email asking why there is not a “school zone” sign or flashing lights near Tecumseh Elementary in DeWitt.
The Your Stories team reached out to the Jamesville-DeWitt School District, the Town of DeWitt and DeWitt Police.
Nottingham Road has a number of signs including a stop sign, a 30-mile per hour speed limit sign and a cross-walk sign alerting drivers to “slow down,” but no sign that says, “school zone.”
J-D Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Smith and a spokesperson for DeWitt Police both say they believe the current signage is getting the job done. Neither has received complaints or concerns from staff or parents about safety on Nottingham Road.
DeWitt’s highway and planning departments also tell NewsChannel that in order for this area to get an official “school zone” sign — the district would need to put in that request. The town would then move forward to get the proper approval.
