As of now, Sammy Watkins will be a free agent next March.
The Bills declined to pick up his fifth year option on Tuesday. His rookie contract expires after the 2017 season.
There are still options to prevent Watkins from leaving Buffalo. The Bills can sign him to a new contract any time they wish.
They can also use the franchise tag to keep Sammy for, at least, the 2018 season. That route would cost the Bills approximately three million dollars more (exact figures would not be known until the franchise tag prices are announced next offseason).
Sean McDermott issued a statement about the move along with the Bills announcement.
“Sammy and I have had a good conversation about this decision. There is no question Sammy is a very good football player. We look forward to having a healthy Sammy Watkins on the field in 2017.”
