Fred Jackson not done with NFL or, he hopes, Bills

Fred Jackson says he hasn’t signed his last contract in the NFL.

Or with the Bills.

Jackson spoke in Sioux City, Iowa over the weekend. His old indoor football team, the Bandits, played their home opener on Saturday. Jackson was honored before the game, signed autographs and greeted Iowa Bills fans.

He was cut from the Bills at the end of training camp in 2015. There was bitterness and frustration at the time, but it seems to have disappated.

If his NFL career is truly over, Jackson would like to sign a one-day contract and formally retire.

There’s only one place that can happen.

“It’s automatic. It has to be as a Buffalo Bill,” Jackson said. “I owe those guys everything. The fan base has by far stuck behind me the most. And still talk to me now. Bills Mafia is who has made me who I am today. I love playing for those guys. As long as I can go sign that one day contract and retire as a Buffalo Bill. If they’re going to have me, I’d definitely love to do that.”

However, that isn’t his immediate plan.

Jackson still wants to play another season in the NFL. He was out of football last year, but thinks the rest has left him in a healthier and better position to contribute.

“I’m going to try to spend the next two, three months trying to get on a roster,” Jackson said. “I was in contact with a few teams last year about coming in, and things just never worked out. We’ll see. We’ll shake those branches and see if something happens. If it doesn’t, I’m going to hang my hat on the ten years that I did play. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

He wishes the current Bills nothing but the best and has optimism for the new regime.

“I think they’ve got a great coach. One who knows what they want to do,” Jackson said of new head coach Sean McDermott. “I know they’ve got the whole Tyrod thing going on. I like Tyrod. I like what he brings to the table. But again that’s not my decision to make.

I think they all did some great things last year. There was just a couple games they came up short in. That’s the nature of the business. But I think they have the pieces there. If those guys stay healthy, I think they’ll be able to contend and get to the playoffs next year.”

Maybe even with Jackson on the roster.

Even if it’s just for one day.
