LYNCHBURG, VA (WSYR-TV) – No. 22 Syracuse will start the season with a win.
The Orange shutout Liberty 24-0 to open the season with a road victory. The score could be deceiving to how the game actually went.
SU turned the ball over three times in the first half, but managed to have a 10-0 halftime lead thanks to an early second quarter rushing touchdown from redshirt-junior running back Abdul Adams.
All three SU touchdowns came on the ground as sophomore running back Jarveon Howard scored from one yard out in the third and senior running back Moe Neal broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Redshirt-sophomore Tommy DeVito finished his first career start 17-35 for 176 yards and two interceptions.
The Orange defense showed up with eight sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Senior defensive end Kendall Coleman and redshirt-junior nose tackle Josh Black had two sacks each. Redshirt-sophmore Ifeatu Melifonwu and sophomore Andre Cisco both had interceptions in the contest.
Syracuse will next face Maryland on Sept. 7th at noon on ESPN.
