Syracuse falls to Pittsburgh in overtime thriller

PITTSBURGH, PA (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse headed to Pittsburgh on Saturday looking for some firsts.

The Orange has not started the season 5-1 since 1999 and has not won at Heinz Field since 2001.

Neither of those came true, instead, Syracuse played in its first overtime game of the year.

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey’s interception in the end zone in overtime gave the Pittsburgh Panthers a 44-37 win over the Orange.

On its first possession in OT,  Pitt running back Darrin Hall scored on the 3-yard touchdown run to give Panthers the lead for good.

Pittsburgh kicker Alex Kessman sent the game into overtime when he connected on a 45-yard field goal with :08 seconds remaining in regulation to tied the game at 37-37.  Kessman kicked field goals of 54 and 55 yards in the first half.

The Orange trailed 27-17 early in the third quarter when the game was delayed for 69 minutes by bad weather.  After the weather delay, the Orange rallied to take a 37-34 lead when SU kicker Andre Szmyt connected on a 51-yard field goal with just under 6:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Jarveon Howard scored his first two career touchdown runs for the Orange finishing with 18 yards.  Dungey completed 18 of 38 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown and two interceptions. Dungey also ran for 70 yards and one touchdown and a fumble.

Sophomore tight end Aaron Hackett caught his first career touchdown, it was also the first catch of his career, when Dungey connected with him on a 1- yard pass to open the scoring for the day. The pass is Dungey's 50th career touchdown pass and he is the third QB team in history with 50+ touchdown passes. He is behind Donovan McNabb who has 77 and Ryan Nassib who has 70.

For the second straight week, the Orange gave up more than 200 rushing yards. Panthers redshirt senior Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall combined for 299 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Syracuse falls to 4-2 and 1-2 in the ACC, while Pitt is now 3-3 and 2-1 in conference play.

The Orange head into the bye week this week and will host North Carolina on October 20th with a game time yet to be determined.
