SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse, while challenged at times, never was in danger of falling to Niagara on Saturday night.
The Orange held off former CBA standout Greg Paulus and his Purple Eagles for a 71-57 win.
Elijah Hughes filled the stat sheet per usual. The redshirt junior finished with 19 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds. Buddy Boeheim also reached double figures with 15 points. Bourama Sidibe made his presence felt with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Joe Girard III also had 10 points.
The Orange got off to a great start. Boeheim would hit two early threes to put SU up 10-0 with 16:56 remaining in the first. The first half fast start continued from there. With 13:51 remaining, Hughes hit a bucket with the foul to make it 20-4 Syracuse.
The Purple Eagles only would be as close as 10 in the first half. Buddy Boeheim had 9 first half points and both Elijah Hughes and Bourama Sidibe had 8 first half points as the Orange led 41-28 at the break.
In the second half, Boeheim would hit his fourth and fifth three to push the lead to 17, at 47-30 at 17:14 left in the game. The largest lead of the game was 20, 55-35, thanks to two free throws from Brycen Goodine with 12:35 to play.
Niagara did rally to make it an 11 point game with 4:56 remaining, but Joe Girard III hit a deep three to make it 66-50 and the Orange held off the Purple Eagles from there.
Syracuse did win the rebound battle, 46-33, for just the sixth time this season. SU also turned the ball over 16 times.
Syracuse is now 8-5(1-1) and will restart ACC play in 2020. The Orange will take on Notre Dame on January 4th at 4pm inside the Dome. The game will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU.
