Syracuse men win sixth ACC cross country title

Orange Nation

BLACKSBURG, VA. – Trailing at 4k and tied at 6k, the Syracuse men’s cross country team used a strong finishing kick to claim the program’s sixth ACC title in its seven seasons in the conference.

The victory, the first for Brien Bell as a head coach, was earned by beating one of the deeper ACC fields in recent memory, as No. 28 Syracuse bested five teams ranked ahead of them in the USTFCCCA poll this week.

The Orange finished with 68 points as a team, five points ahead of No. 20 Notre Dame (73 points) for the conference crown.

Depth was the key for the Orange, with the top-six Syracuse finishers crossing the line within 14 seconds of one another and all six earning All-ACC honors.

Nathan Henderson was the top ‘Cuse finisher, crossing the line in 24:39.0, which was good for ninth.

The women finished fifth, led by All-ACC finishers Amanda Vestri and Rachel Bonner. Vestri crossed the line in ninth, with a time of 21:03.6.

Syracuse will look to defend its men’s title at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo in two weeks.
