SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — SU tuned up for its date with the reigning national champs from Virginia by hosting the defending national champs from Canada.
Carleton jumped out to an early 15-8 lead but Syracuse settled down, closed the half on an 11-2 run building a 41-31 advantage at the break, and led the rest of the way en route to a 77-58 exhibition victory.
Elijah Hughes led the Orange in scoring, just like he did against Daemen College on Saturday night. Hughes finished with 15 points. Freshman Joe Girard provided some instant offense off the bench by dropping in 14 points in 16 minutes of action. Buddy Boeheim was the only other SU player in double figures. Buddy scored all 12 of his points in the first half.
Syracuse finished the game shooting 47% from the field and 43.5% from three-point range. The Orange, as a team, made 10 shots from behind the arc.
SU was perfect in the preseason, winning all four games in Italy and then going 2-0 inside the Dome.
Next up, is the regular season opener on November 6th against Virginia. The Cavaliers begin their title defense ranked 11th in the preseason AP poll.
