Athlete of the Week: Alexa von Holtz

Athlete of the Week

MEXICO, N.Y (WSYR-TV) – If you attend a Mexico high school swimming meet, it’s hard to miss Mexico freshman Alexa von Holtz because she’s been making waves in the sport since 7th grade.

“I was hitting sectional times in our club meets so I was asked to move up (to varsity) as a 7th grader” said Alexa. “It was nerve racking going against seniors but once I did my first meet, I was like this isn’t so bad.”

Intimidated at first, Alexa has since excelled. As a 7th grader she was the first girl from Mexico to ever make states. This fall she is heading back for the third year in a row.

“Every time she’s made a state cut I’m always the first one at the end of her lane even after the race is over I stand there and wait for her to cool down and tell her how proud I am, said Reatha von Holtz, Mexico junior and Alexa’s sister. “It’s amazing. She is an amazing swimmer, I love watching her swim its really what she does best. There’s not another girl in mexico that can come closer to where she is”

Her sister might be right.

Alexa has individual school records in the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 indiviual medley. All three are events she’ll be swimming at state this November. On top of that, she has records in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke individually, and in all three relays; the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay. She’s already come a long way from when she first started swimming with her sister.

“We both started at the same time so we’ve both seen each other progress. Ill never forget, her first championship qualifier standing in the hallway saying I want to be like her and actually having a coach that came up to me and said – that said alright so we’re gonna try this now and that’s when it basically started,” said Alexa.

Alexa not only has the support of her sister as a teammate, but her Mom Laurel was a synchronized swimmer growing up. Her Dad, David, is an assistant coach with Mexico.

“It can be a pain sometimes,” Alexa laughed, “But its nice because he knows my boundaries better than anyone”

The state swimming meet will be held at Ithaca College from November 22nd-23rd.
