Longtime Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Mike Hopkins is giving back to his new basketball family.

Hopkins, now the head coach of the University of Washington Huskies, was named the Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year back in March.

Coach Hopkins has the most wins for a first-year coach at UW since Marv Harshman finished 20-6 in the 1971-72 season.

To show his thanks for the Huskies fans, Hopkins will using his Coach of the Year bonus to buy $15,000 worth of Starbucks gift cards for fans.

Starbucks originated in Seattle, where UW is located.

Hopkins has transformed a team that went 9-22 last season to a sixth place finish in the Pac-12.

UW basketball ended their season 21-13 overall.

Hopkins has been with the University of Washington Huskies for just a year after spending 22 years with the Orange.

“It was a great honor to be named Pac-12 Coach of the Year, but the reality is this is a tribute to our entire team, our program and the University community,” Hopkins said in a statement. “I wouldn’t have won this award without such incredible support, so I wanted to give back to some of the many important people who have made this a memorable first season possible, and have welcomed me and my family into this incredible Seattle community.”

Hopkins will be on-site handing out $12 Starbucks gift cards to Washington fans on Thursday at the Starbucks located in Seattle’s U-Village.
