SYRACUSE, N.Y. (TBT) – The last game of the day on the opening day of the TBT regional in Syracuse was the closest as top-seeded Boeheim’s Army escaped with a 68-65 victory against We Are D3, 68-65.
After trailing for most of the first half, Boeheim’s Army finally grabbed the lead in the third quarter when Jordan Crawford, who led the squad with 17 points, connected on a 3-pointer to put his team ahead 51-48.
We Are D3 would not surrender and the game entered the Elam Ending with Boeheim’s Army ahead by four, 60-56. Two free throws from Eric Devendorf and one by Hakim Warrick put the Army up, 67-61, and needing just one point for the target score of 68. We Are D3 answered with a 3-ball from Johnny McCarthy, to close the gap to 67-64.
Following a defensive stand, McCarthy was fouled and made one-of-two and draw We Are D3 within two, 67-65. Crawford was fouled at the other end and sealed the win by making the second of two from the charity stripe. Warrick had 13 points and eight rebounds for Boeheim’s Army.
We Are D3 had 20 points from Arik Smith and 17 from McCarthy.
Boeheim’s Army advances to the second round to face fifth-seeded Gael Nation on Saturday at noon.
