C-NS hands state-ranked Liverpool first loss

Local Sports

A pair of sectional title contenders met on the diamond Monday evening at North Syracuse Middle School as a pair of aces took to the mound.

Jeff Destefano, who has committed to Canisius, got the start for unbeaten Liverpool. The Warriors are ranked #10 in the latest Class AA state poll. C-NS countered with Brockport-bound senior Chris Cramer.

Given the talented pitchers and given the chilly temperatures, it’s no surprise that hits were hard to come by.

Destefano pitched into the seventh, gave up no runs, and struck out five.  As good as Destefano was, Cramer was even better. He threw eight shutout innings, striking out seven, and giving up only two hits.

Liverpool’s best opportunity to score came in the fourth when the Warriors used a single, stolen base, and balk to put a runner on third with nobody out. The Northstars though were able to cut down that run at the plate keeping things scoreless.

Nobody scored until the bottom of the eighth inning. D’Ante Zapanta smacked a double with two outs to get things started. After Nick Spinella was walked and Dylan Frawley was hit by a pitch, Brendan Reilly earned a bases loaded walk forcing home Zapanta with the game-winning run.

This marks the first loss of the season for the Warriors.

These two teams will be right back at it facing each other again on Tuesday in Liverpool.
