Who is Paul Broadhurst?

Golf fans in Rochester are going to be hearing the name ‘Paul Broadhurst’ a lot over the next two months.

So, who is he?

Broadhurst is the defending KitchenAid Senior PGA Champion when the event arrives in Rochester on May 21st.

The 53-year old has had an impressive career overseas.

The Walsall, England native was the European Tour Rookie of the Year in 1989 and was part of the 1991 Ryder Cup team.

He won six times on the European Tour but had much success on American soil. Broadhurst never won on the PGA Tour and lost his card in the mid 2000s.

Broadhurst was in Rochester for the first time in 1995 as part of the broadcast team for Sky News at the Ryder Cup at Oak Hill.

I remember some of the course. I was quite surprised yesterday, I took a little tour around the course yesterday how much I did remember. It’s going to be a tough test, said Broadhurst.

His career has since aged like fine wine.

Since turning 50, Broadhurst has won 10 times combined between the PGA Champions tour and the European Senior tour.

Last year at Benton Harbor, Broadhurst won the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship by four strokes. He shot 66-64-63 over the final three rounds to tie the record for lowest total in a championship at -19.

”Some of the best golf I’ve ever played, smiled Broadhurst. ”Certainly some of the best putts I’ve ever made in my life. I look back at the highlights and it just seems like I made 40 footer after 40 footer.”

Broadhurst now returns to Oak Hill 23 years after he was here as an analyst for the Ryder Cup.

”I know how difficult it’s going to be from being here in ’95. They didn’t tear this place apart, so I’m fully aware how difficult the tournament is going to be,” said Broadhurst.”

It’s an iconic golf course. I know the talk on the Champions Tour is, ‘Great we’re going to be Oak Hill’ and Oh no. It’s going to be difficult.”
