ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The summer weather has us thinking about jumping in the water to cool off, but would you swim in Onondaga Lake if a beach was added to the shoreline? That’s the question thousands of people were asked in a survey last winter and on Wednesday night, the results will be made public at a public hearing at the VIP building at the Lakeview Amphitheater.
The survey consisted of more than 2,000 locals back in January and they found that most people would go into the water. In fact, most of those that answered the survey say there aren’t enough beaches around the area.
Though it’s just an idea at this point, the county has really focused in on building a beach at Willow Bay, right off Long Branch Road.
We did our own survey Wednesday afternoon and asked a few people if they would swim at Onondaga Lake. While the county says the lake is clean, many people may need some convincing before they take a dip.
“People who have been here for a long time know how polluted that lake, this lake, was and that they’ve cleaned it up. But it takes a long time to get over that part of it. But the younger kids don’t know anything about it being polluted, so to them, it’s just a body of water,” said Liverpool resident Jimmy Ryan.
Just before the meeting, a group of people who are against putting a beach at Onondaga Lake shared their disagreement with the project.
