UPDATE: The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search and Recovery Team and State Police divers recovered the body of a 62-year-old man who went missing Saturday after jumping into Oneida Lake.
Richard Whitney of West Monroe, who was reported missing yesterday at approximately 3 p.m. after he went swimming from a boat and did not resurface, was discovered nearly 24 hours later just north of Dunham Island.
New York State Police utilized its sonar equipment to locate the victim’s body. Divers from both the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police recovered the body.
(WSYR-TV) — The Onondaga Sheriff’s Office says a boat was idling near the Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club around 3 p.m. on Saturday when a man in his 60s jumped off the boat and got lost in the current.
The man was not wearing a life jacket. One of the people with him tried jumping in to save him, but they were unable to find him.
Agencies from all over Central New York are responding and multiple dive teams are involved in the search effort.
People involved in yesterday’s search on the other side of the lake were sent to the Cicero area to share resources.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is the lead on the investigation. Search efforts will continue until it gets dark and will resume in the morning if need be.
