SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Four Syracuse firefighters have received one of the highest honors from the New York State Professional Firefighters Association.
Kevin Cox, Rodney Mattison, Chris DeStefano and Lieutenant Gene Johnson were all named Firefighters of the Year after two separate incidents that happened just six days apart.
In March 2018, Firefighter Cox was called when a teenager was severely wounded after falling through a window. Cox kept the wound pinched closed until they got to Upstate University Hospital for surgery, saving the teen’s life.
Less than a week later, firefighters were called to Fitch Street, where they repeatedly searched the house through flames, finding several victims, including a baby. Four people died from the fire.
All four firefighters were recognized Monday night at the Association’s 80th convention in Saratoga Springs.
