On this week’s “Tell Me Something Good,” a Girl Scout troop from Central Square has taken it upon themselves to improve the activities available at Van Lieu Park in Hastings. Members of Girl Scout Troop 10871 created the “Extraordinary Acres” project as they work toward earning their silver award, which is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.
The “Extraordinary Acres” plan came to fruition almost five years ago when the troop members realized that Van Lieu Park didn’t offer much past a football field and a baseball diamond. The plan includes building a multi-use court, an inclusive swing and a whirl ride that is accessible to everyone.
The girls have already raised over $58,000 with roughly $30,000 to go. Fundraising events ranged from a traveling face painting booth to spaghetti dinners and have all been geared toward helping them meet their goal.
In addition to doing local fundraising, the troop members are in the running to win a $25,000 grant from State Farm through their Neighborhood Assist program. If they win the grant, the troop hopes to put that money toward building an accessible bathroom in the park.
