(WSYR-TV) — All lanes of Interstate 81 between Tully and LaFayette are now back open after they were closed most of Monday morning.
The lanes were closed in both directions around 5 a.m. Monday after police got reports of a vehicle in the median on I-81 south near the LaFayette weigh station.
When police arrived, they found a man in the car attempting to take his life with a chemical. They closed down the lanes to prevent possible exposure to anyone driving by.
Two New York State Troopers were injured by glass when they were breaking the window of the car to try to get to the driver. One trooper was cut on the arm and the other suffered an eye injury. Both are expected to be okay. At this time, it does not appear the chemicals used in the incident affected the troopers.
