Soldier from Trumansburg killed in Afghanistan

AFGHANISTAN (WSYR-TV) — One of the two soldiers killed this week in Afghanistan is from Trumansburg, Tompkins County.

Sergeant James Johnston, 24, was assigned to Afghanistan out of Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed from small arms fire on Tuesday.

The other soldier killed was from Germany.

More than 2,400 U.S. service personnel have died in Afghanistan since October 2001.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has ordered that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Friday in Johnston’s honor.
