The Southside Community Coalition is excited to bring back their Sankofa Festival for 2019.
According to Shante Harris El, president of the southside community coalition board, the word Sankofa means “go back and get it”, and she stated that the coalition is using Sankofa to go back in time when there were businesses and culture along the Southside Corridor of Syracuse.
“There were a lot of businesses, lots of culture along the Southside Streets at that time and we want to revitalize that.” she said.
A parade will kick off the festival down S Salina St and special guests include Senator Rachel May and Counselor Lotaya Allen to name a few.
To celebrate youth within the community Sankofa will also feature a showcase led by young musicians from the Syracuse area. Headlining the show will be Truth Speaker ( Voice of the Youth), followed by performances from Hevn’Ayn, Amani Bowale, the Elks Drum Line, the Elevation Drill Team, and other local performers.
The festival will also feature speakers who will speak to different topics that are important to the community.
Sankofa kicks off on Saturday, August 10 from 12 to 8pm at Sankofa Park on South Salina Street in Syracuse. To learn more about the festival visit, SankofaFestSyracuse.com
