World Refugee Day Festival celebrates ‘American Dream’

(WSYR-TV) — The second annual World Refugee Day Festival at Schiller Park on Saturday was a success as a plethora of cultures came together.

By definition, a ‘refugee’ is someone forced to leave their nation to escape war, violence, or persecution. The event featured a soccer tournament with teams representing 11 different countries.

Along with cultural food and performance to showcase the diversity in Syracuse.

“It is for all the refugees to come together and celebrate everybody from the community. It doesn’t matter what you are, the whole idea is to come together,” said organizer Tai Shaw.

The event was put on by the New American Forum, a coalition of local refugee leaders who focus on better fostering the new American population. To learn more about the group, click here.
