Youth hockey non-profit dropping Cicero Twin Rinks name: First on 9

CICERO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — What people know as Cicero Twin Rinks on Meltzer Court, off Route 11, is about to change.

The youth hockey non-profit organization, Midstate Youth Hockey Association, has owned the facility since 2012.

In a report “First on 9,” the board of directors has decided to change the multi-use facility to Midstate Athletic Community Center.

A renaming celebration and fundraiser is set for Aug. 4 at the athletics center.

“Hockey is foremost in their plans. Hockey is foremost in their fundraising, but we want to expand the notion that this building is for the community and not specifically the community of Cicero, but a regional community,” said Rob Bick, a board of director with Midstate Youth Hockey Association.

The one-stop spot for families has a gym, activities room for children, pickleball and other programs for members as young as eight-weeks-old up to seniors.

The facility also has a bar and lounge just off the two rinks which board members hope will soon score additional funds.

“We need sponsors for both these rinks. You can get your name on an Olympic size rink. You can get your name on an NHL size rink. We need sponsors for the boards. We need sponsors for the activities,” Bick said. “They have never pursued that. It’s a great opportunity. There are 800,000 people who come into this facility every year.”

Some painting and repairs are underway in what will be ongoing improvements for the entire facility.

“We’re going to have a dunk tank, an inflatable family obstacle course. We’re going to have Zumba, Yoga,” said Kristin Wise, executive director for Midstate Athletic Community Center.” We’re going to have a pickleball tournament. Public skate for the entire community to come out and ice skate and beat the heat.”

The “Ultimate Picnic and Pancake Breakfast” will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4. Families from across Central New York are welcome.

Single admission for a Midstate Youth Hockey Association member is $5. Single admission for non-members is $7.

Family admission for Midstate Youth Hockey Association members is $15 and $20 per family for non-members.
