SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV)
With the calendar flipping to August, how did July 2019 stack up to previous Julys in Syracuse?
The month was very warm. We ended up 3.4 degrees above normal for the month. That puts it in a tie for the 9th warmest July on record in Syracuse. Official records go back to 1902 in Syracuse.
There were 8 days where the temperature reached or exceeded 90 degrees or double the average of four such days in a typical July. Although not extreme or record breaking, the warmth was fairly consistent. We reached at least 80 degrees on 28 days this July. While it may not seem like a big deal, it is the 5th most 80 degree days ever in July.
Rainfall at the Syracuse airport was below normal in July. We did end up with 3.40” of rain, which is about a third of an inch below normal. However, going into the last few days of the month Syracuse was running a rainfall deficit of over an inch so rain from summer thunderstorms made up almost all of that deficit.
The rainfall did come in spurts for Syracuse. Around three inches of our monthly total occurred on just three days! Elsewhere across central New York the monthly rain totals for July averaged between 3 and 5 inches.
